Another Super Hornet milestone. Navy test pilot Lieut. Tom Hole fires an AIM-9 Sidewinder missile from the Super Hornet F/A-18F(2) during tests conducted out of Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md. The U.S. Navy's newest Strike Fighter, Super Hornet replaces the A-6 Intruder which ended active Naval service 28 Feb., and is the programmed replacement for the F-14 Tomcat. An evolutionary upgrade to the combat proven C and D series, Super Hornet will conduct both air-to-air and air-to-ground combat missions. Improvements include increases in fuel capacity, engine power, mission radius (40%), weapons stations, aircraft surface area (25%), and its ability to remain on station during typical combat air patrol scenarios. Another successful Super Hornet milestone. The Navy's newest strike-fighter, the F/A-18E Super Hornet, successfully completed its first in-flight tests with ordnance Feb. 21. The weapons package consisted of two 2000-lbs bombs, two AGM-88 Anti-Radiation missiles, and two AIM-9 heat-seeking Sidewinder missiles. With 14,000lbs of ordnance, Super Hornet took off weighing 62,400 lbs. with fuel. The aircraft was piloted by former Marine aviator Jim Sandberg of the Integrated Test Team (ITT), located at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md. Super Hornet replaces the A-6E Intruder which ends active naval service on 28 Feb. 1997, and is the future programmed replacement for the F-14 Tomcat. The future meets the future � U.S. Naval Academy midshipmen get a rare opportunity to see the Navy's newest carrier based aircraft, the F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet, at the Integrated Test Team (ITT) facility on board Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, Md. During their brief tour, the midshipmen were able view the aircraft close up and speak with the program's Navy test pilots.
